With the arrival of the CloudFest videos on LRob, I had in mind to create an introduction that reflected my own style, an audio-visual signature that was both striking and personal. And now it's done! In this article, I take you behind the scenes of the creation of this 7-second intro, the fruit of a long-standing passion for sound, music and image.
LRob video intro
A drummer's hat, training as a sound engineer... and a past as an editor
Those who know me will know that I've been a drummer for over 20 years. Add to that my training in post-production and audio mixing, and a background as a video editor, and you have all the ingredients needed to create a tailor-made intro in my own image.
One Sunday afternoon, driven by a creative impulse, I set off: 4 hours of experimentation, pleasure and cross-fertilization of techniques.
Sound design: a rhythm, an idea
I wanted a short, effective intro: one bar, i.e. 4 beats. What can you play on 4 beats to get a groove going?
I went through various trials: groove, break, eighth notes, triplets? In the end, I opted for a binary eighth-note drum pattern, syncopated but fluid, with a well-placed break. Rhythmic elements to enhance the video!
Musical accompaniment: piano, bass and synths
The piano came next: a series of atmospheric, progressive chords, kept to the end for a discreet but present acoustic touch.
Then the bass, first played, then replaced by a bass synth more consistent with the sonic identity I was trying to create.
Finally, the synths: three layers superimposed to create a technological and immersive texture:
- A high-pitched, easily identifiable melody
- A rhythmic motif in dialogue with the drums
- A robotic vocal effect on peaches and contretemps
All mixed with care: filters, compression, so that each element finds its place.
Logo animation: between rhythm and light
On the visual side, I animated the LRob logo in sync with the drum "hits". Each visual element reacts to a sound element:
- A bass drum or snare drum brings up a letter
- A left hi-hat illuminates an "R
- A bass tom on the right bounces a "B".
To top it all off: RGB (red, green, blue), a nod to the geek universe. On the final synth echoes, the "L", the logo bar and the planet are subtly illuminated.
A finishing touch to bind it all together
The beginning of the intro felt a little abrupt. So I used an old technique: apply a massive reverb to the intro, render it, invert it, and fade it in at the beginning. This creates a beckoning effect, an aspiration towards the sound to come.
To accompany this rise in sound, the logo's planet enters the scene in a spiral, as if sucked into the screen.
And that's how I came up with this introduction, which I hope you'll enjoy as much as I enjoyed creating it.
